Maggie Walker

Maggie Walker is one of my heroes! I named the high school in CRISIS COMPANY for her.

There actually is a Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School for Government and International Studies.

You can see their website here: http://www.gsgis.k12.va.us/

Maggie Walker was the first woman president of a bank in the USA!

(Not just the first African-American woman president – the first woman! Her parents started life as slaves and she was born on July 15th, 1867)

She is my hero for two main reasons, although there are many qualities I admire about her. Firstly, she acted when she saw a need. She did not look for glory or wealth, she looked at problems and tried to find solutions.

Secondly, she kept helping others when terrible things happened in her life, and even after she had to use a wheelchair to get around.

I hope you will read more about Maggie Walker, and other amazing women here: http://www.distinguishedwomen.com/biographies/walker-ml.html
